Tu Kaha Badge

I sat down in front of the whole school, my stomach filled with butterflies. Soon I would get my Tu Kaha badge. But first my video had to be shown. The video about how I want to be remembered. I hate videoing myself. I hate videos of me been shown in front of anyone, and now three hundred people are going to watch it.
The butterflies turned to lead as my video was shown. It was over soon enough, and then it was someone else's turn to be embarrassed.

The videos were over, and we shook hands with him our 2017 teachers and received our badges. I held mine in my hand, suddenly I felt pain… The badge pin part was spiking into my hand.

As soon as the pain was over, I felt strong and proud, and when I put my badge on today, I feel like I am a leader, ready to take on any challenge.

Tu Kaha, stand tall. When you are feeling like a small person, always falling over, don't stay down! Stand tall, ready for the next challenge. Lead people towards success, and don't be afraid of failure, because failure is on the road to success. Failure is the stairs, cheating is the lift. They both lead to success, but cheating is faster, and failure is better for you.

  2. It goes to show that the hard stuff can still be super worthwhile. Which is what standing tall is all about too. If you can take opportunities no matter what the obstacles, it shows you have the courage to stand tall. Xxx Mum

  3. Great post Alison...I am sorry the pin stabbed you! I got stabbed a few times too!

I wonder what challenge you might like to take on? Is there anything you want to initiate at school?

  4. Great expression of your experience Alison. It was a real privilege to be part of that celebration with you as you take on the role of a leader at school. To me standing tall is to be like a tree... with you roots firmly in what you believe in the soil that your family and experiences have surrounded your precious beginnings with. but then extending up to the sky in the way you were meant to grow like a tree growing around obstacles or windswept by forces outside of itself - but still firm in the ground and extending upwards and outwards.
I see my role as an adult in your life as one to nurture the soil so you have a place to grow that has all you need and also to provide some shelter/filtering from the winds of others opinions, thoughts and actions.
Thank you for sharing this experience with all of us.
